C-print, 2009, 63,5 x 86,5 cm, Edition of 5

"My work is prompted by ordinary things that I come across within my daily life; a chair, a favorite blouse, a living room, or simply a person walking by on the street. I am interested in our ability to imbue such everyday objects and spaces with meaning, and equally the emotional impact that these objects and spaces then have on our persona. Through the manipulation of these relationships my work takes form.

People are incongruously maneuvered into spaces as daily routines are turned up-side down. Household items are torn apart and restructured, trapping fragments of the subject who once utilized them. All of these everyday occurrences I visually alter to present the more complex and emotional relationships that lie beneath the surface. In particular, I am interested in the chaotic and dysfunctional associations that are harbored and displaced onto objects and the psychological impact that they can then bring into the subject’s day-to-day life. The identity of the subject and environment is called into question because of their distorted arrangement. This challenge of structure and establishment ironically references movements such as Dada, The Situationists and Fluxes. There is an attempt to break out of conformity though in the end the work implies defeat. The struggle posed by the subject displays their vulnerability and becomes a masochistic and self inflicting conflict encapsulated in a moment of time."
