A gloomy world of dark forces and men in decay opens when Christian Rex van Minnen delivers his most monumental masterpiece to date! "Enantiodromia" is his second solo exhibition at Gallery Poulsen and includes eleven grotesquely beautiful and profound works that collectively culminate in the absolute highlight of the exhibition, Rex van Minnen’s grandiose masterstroke, “Icarus”.

The exhibition first saw the light of day on September 24th, when we invited art critics and the international press to an exclusive preview in New York. Each and every one of his brilliant pieces were received with great adoration and deep fascination, and the exhibition has already gained great reviews in prestigious art magazines like JuxtapozArrested Motion and The Creators Project. Christian Rex van Minnen is also featured in October month’s print edition of Juxtapoz Magazine, who visited his studio in connection with the work production for "Enantiodromia" and the summer exhibition "Juxtapoz x Superflat", curated by Japanese Takashi Murakami.

“Enantiodromia” is both a personal and artistic depiction of individuals in psychological and spiritual transformation. The higher one climbs, the further is the fall when looking inwards to face the innermost dark place. The outstanding triptych ”Icarus” portrays the journey into the mind where the inner shadiness haunts. In here a crucial turning point presents itself; acknowledge your mistakes and set yourself free or be seized by the dark side.

With ”Icarus” Christian Rex van Minnen accentuates the haunting, but also captivating beauty of a very human desire to be more than what one is; to ascend beyond what is known, and become aware of the grave consequences of such a spiritual journey. Unlike the Greek mythical figure Icarus, who was overly confident on his journey towards freedom from his own captivity, rushing directly into his own sudden death, Rex van Minnen’s “Icarus” lands safely on the other side.

Aligned with the Greek legend, Rex van Minnen portrays Icarus’ journey with three figures illustrating ascension, exaltation and collapse. The same three phases occur in the alchemical path to true wisdom, Magnum Opus - the Great lifework, as psychoanalyst Carl Jung appropriated into his philosophy of human development. The alchemists followed the doctrine of three principles: mercury, salt and sulfur, which in their view could be transformed into pure gold. The road to the Magnum Opus is personified as Negredo (the black king), Albedo (the white king) and Rubedo (the red king) in Rex van Minnen’s own Great Work.

The Nigredo is the undifferentiated self, who is unknowingly animated by its own shadows. The transition from this phase to the Albedo is known as Enantiodromia, dark night of the soul, the psychological death. Albedo is the united psyche, and the final phase, Rubedo, is the rebirth into a higher consciousness. In other words, “Icarus” is a deep and philosophical depiction of human transformation, in which man faces his own true self, processes it and lands on the other side.

In addition to “Icarus”, for the first time ever Christian Rex van Minnen will present three ceramic sculptures, one of which shares the title with the exhibition. In line with story of “Icarus”, the sculpture “Enantiodromia” shows a fragile human being, trying to break out of its vacuum. The sculpture has an alluring effect of both disgust and attraction at the same time.

Christian Rex van Minnen has created a completely outstanding series of masterpieces that will undoubtedly enthrall any viewer, while the disturbing dark undertones send shivers down your spine.

The exhibition displays seventeen spectacular works, monotypes and ceramic sculptures.

Christian Rex van Minnen will be present at the opening and available for interviews.
