Eric White & Daniel Davidson - Magic Kingdom 2013

Happy New Year!!!

Gallery Poulsen is proud to present Daniel Davidson and Eric White's "Magic Kingdom." The show's title alludes to the invented house-of-mirrors dreamscape that is choreographed and staged within the paintings and drawings, as figures become part of an ever-expanding and distorted narrative where visual elements unfurl and intertwine in a looping montage of incongruous, complementary, and unexpected visual themes evoking a range of emotional states in the viewer.

The works possess a surreal quality rooted in realism, which grounds the pictures and solidifies the internal dream logic. They also share a depiction of women as a central thematic constant. These women are idealized or anonymized, either free of literal place and time, or stuck in particular and somehow all-too-familiar phantasmagoric locales. Disquieting humor runs throughout the incidental interactions between these dysmorphic personalities, and the viewer is left to create their own personal narrative from divergent snippets of reality, culled into a cohesive fantasy/nightmare from which we don't want to awaken.

Both artists take visual cues from obscure and not-so obscure American pop culture—the source of their images are often anonymous faces, glimpsed from found photography, film, fashion advertising, or outdated period portraits shorn of their original contexts, so that the multiplicity and complication underlying them are exposed—we see an exaggerated smile of joy come to reveal hidden terror or fear, or a simple, placid gaze become riddled with wonder, confusion, anxiety, or a sense of the mysterious.

Daniel Davidson's works in "Magic Kingdom" display figuration and abstraction as twin protagonists spilling into a spontaneous mirroring field, where the initial gesture of an ink blot or an accidental scratch can open out and transform into a tangled architecture of faces, dizzying designs, and vibrant color. Davidson approaches his drawings by working directly on selected portions of the paper, often opposing faces with abstract forms on differing sides, then wetting the paper and making numerous folds to produce symmetrical transfers and unexpected new images—a process that results in something akin to a hallucinatory Rorschach test, a Gysin/Burroughs visual cut-up/fold-up experiment, or the remnants of some wildly disorienting dada parlor game.

Eric White's expertly rendered oil paintings seduce our eye and pull us in. Like the car accident we have to slow down for, we are voyeurs to his bizarre imagination. We peer into a cranial peephole to see beautiful protagonists awkwardly engaging in paranoid psychological melodramas in a landscape made up of indeterminate yet recognizable fragments which exude the distinct odor of a decaying Americana. The use of appropriated film imagery serves to symbolize an invented and idealized “reality,” and combined with other random components create complex and claustrophobic scenarios which examine dysfunctional relationship, buried emotion, and the finite boundaries of human perception.
