Escape from New York! New Garde Now

Alison Elizabeth Taylor
Kristen Schiele
Rachel Schmidhofer
Robin Williams

Med ”Escape from New York! New Garde Now” præsenterer vi fire nye spændende navne; Alison Elizabeth Taylor, Kristen Schiele, Rachel Schmidhofer og Robin Williams.

Escape from New York! New Garde Now

Alison Elizabeth Taylor
Kristen Schiele
Rachel Schmidhofer
Robin Williams

Two clever men have made a plan, four talented female artists have fled New York, and Gallery Poulsen has opened the doors for an exceptional show this fall. With “Escape from New York! New Garde Now” we present four new and interesting names: Alison Elizabeth Taylor, Kristen Schiele, Rachel Schmidhofer, and Robin Williams.

The artists have been hand-picked with a discriminating eye by Eric White and Morten Poulsen, who have curated the show with one clear goal – to send the most talented art-vanguard in exile for a while here in Denmark, so we have the opportunity to enjoy this special company too.

These four women have several things in common: they are a part of the New York art scene, they have a convincing and explorative approach to their media, and then they present reality in a colorful, eye-catching, and alternative way. The works really make us open our eyes and let us see the world and everyday life with a new perspective. It is an effect that only the best and most seductive guard can create!

Alison Elizabeth Taylor makes fantastic and impressive works primarily in wood. The work borrows from the technique intarsia (wood inlay), which can be described as a collage of myriads of veneers – a stylized and decorative art form which can be traced all the way back to ancient Egypt. However, in an exciting way, Taylor sends us directly up to present times through her subject of figuration and through her innovative approach to the wood. The works have an intense texture through the wood, and an illusory perspective enabled by adding oil paint. The traditional craft really gets a serious kick in the butt and shows us how detailed, deep, and mesmerizing a painting in wood can be.

The collage is also brought into play by Kristen Schiele, who combines oil, acrylic, and silkscreen in a very colorful and dynamic way. Schiele’s compositions are complex and vibrant because they continuously create new spaces within spaces for the eye. The motives are moving, and just as you have identified a wall in the back of a room, the same element becomes a lawn between several tree trunks. We are placed in imaginative and dream-like spaces that we’re not used to be in. Schiele deceive us without a hitch. The more it happens, the better it feels paradoxically.

Speaking of optical illusion, Robin Williams is in a class of her own. Here we really get exposed to trompe l’oeil, French for ‘the eye’s deceits’. Williams has a phenomenal ability to depicting constructed still life motifs. Arrangements with potted plants, vases, and human figures, combined with mirrors, shadows, and a strong light setting, all together create extremely complex motifs. Only the photograph seems adequate as a medium to perpetuate such a complex composition, but Williams’ works disprove that fact without a doubt. Extensively she masters the oil painting’s special capability to create space on a totally flat canvas. We can not resist being surprised and amused by this hyperrealism.

The fourth leg in this quartet is Rachel Schmidhofer, who is the expressive and exuberant contribution. Schmidhofer both adds undiluted oil paint (impasto) to the canvas and removes it with her fingers, which conjures everyday motifs of dressing tables and pets to life. The technique is extremely expressive and gives the works a texture and vividness, which brings the home’s everyday objects like the aquarium, moisturizer, and posters to the foreground. Schmidhofer shows us the simple things in life in a very complicated way. The domestic and the ordinary becomes perpetuated in these relief-like works, where beautiful traces from the artist’s hands are not smoothed out, much to our delight. Schmidhofer’s expressionism is acute, colorful, and hard to keep your eyes off.

This show “Escape from New York! New Garde Now”, made by the four talented artists above, challenges the eye continuously. There are new angles, new figures, new colors og above all new stories, constantly emerging and surprising. With these four women on the loose in Gallery Poulsen, it’s difficult not to leave the gallery without a captivating aesthetic impression on your retina.

Several of the artists and co-curator Eric White will be present at the opening.
