Gallery Poulsen på Art on Paper New York 2017

It is with great delight and a joyous reunion in sight that Gallery Poulsen yet again crosses the Atlantic, bound for The Big Apple. With fond memories and tremendous experiences behind us, there is nothing like Armory Week that can lure us to the city that never sleeps. However, this year we have something new and very special in store for New York.

For this year's Armory Week, we have teamed up with Art on Paper – a thriving young art fair that entered Armory Week three years ago. As an ambitious and visionary component, Art on Paper differs with its unique focus on works on and in paper and has rapidly established itself as an important platform for the arts.

For Gallery Poulsen this means having a unique opportunity to show the world this particular side of our brilliantly diverse artists, many of who have already gained worldwide recognition for this specific art form; Aaron Johnson and Debra Hampton are both represented on paper in MOMA’s permanent collection. We have thus gathered a team of our sharpest artists, each of who effortlessly masters the discipline of 'paper'.

Oil, acrylic, watercolor, charcoal and cutouts overpower the paper into complex and solid perspectives that testify to a craft of such caliber that the advanced execution provides a simple yet complete expression. The explosion of details makes high demands for the gaze of viewer, who is sent through layer upon layer of quirky realms, morbid stories and alluring spaces.

Known for his classic but also disturbing fabled scenarios, Nicola Verlato has created a colossal portrait of the infamous character Colonel Kurtz for Art on Paper. The uncrowned master of woodcut, John Jacobsmeyer has once again managed to create a complete and captivating piece that draws us in completely to his alternative world of humorous and political narratives.
Once you really start exploring Mi Ju’s wonderful color eruptions, you will discover the most intricate details. Small neatly carved figures and shapes of paper have gradually taken root in her body of work, bringing the paintings to life in an enigmatic visual buzzing.

Debra Hampton is known and acknowledged for creating absolute world-class paper collages. With her unparalleled overview, meticulously composite symbols and deep layers of hidden agendas, she is without comparison a league of her own. We also offer a joyful reunion with Barnaby Whitfield’s velvet smooth pastels of haunting characters, which stare down the viewer and crawl under their skin.

In other words, you are in for an exuberant medley of intense artworks, each of which sends us far deeper into the image than the paper’s seemingly light surface. So, come by booth C6 at Art on Paper and have each and every one of your senses saturated!
