Mu Pan: ”Your Mother Should Know”

It will not be a quiet affair when Gallery Poulsen finishes off the summer season with a bang and opens up for the battlefield, where violent conflicts and terrifying scenarios take place. In Mu Pan’s fabulously bloody universe, the ferocity flows freely. As an ardent storyteller, his stories take life as each brushstroke touches the surface of the wood panels. With an astonishing attention to detail, his visual expression reflects both a deep fascination with East Asian war history as well as a prominently seamless craftsmanship.

The exhibition ”Your Mother Should Know” features bloody power struggles between races, ages, cultures and particularly species. The Chinese-American artist is able to visualize intense war scenes so vivid that one is led to take a step backwards to avoid being completely sucked into the eye of the storm.

Mu Pan is primarily preoccupied with epic storytelling, and preferably of the macabre sort. He has long ago cemented himself as one of the art scene heavyweights with his remarkably detailed paintings of grotesque battles between humans and prehistoric animals, mutants and mythical creatures. At first glance, the exhibition shows one absurd war scene after another; however, the permeated gloomy satire is an expression for Mu Pan’s rejection and disapproval of the world he is surrounded by. Just below the surface lies a series of stories about confrontations between people, global conflicts and oppressed minorities.

Each work is a piece of a larger story that unfolds inside the mind of the artist, being the primary force in his work production. Work by work, we get fragments of the overall story, constantly developed by Mu Pan in various subjects.

For this exhibition Mu Pan has created the series ”Dinoassholes” as an extension of his previous series of riot monkeys portraying historic Chinese warriors. In the Dinoasshole-series the enormous prehistoric animals are similarly provided with human characteristics and Asian facial features, indicating an underlying story of human nature and the development of human history.

”Dinoasshole chapter 4: Brachiosaurus” is a story about racism and human rivalries. Mu Pan has brought the leaf-clad monkeys from his previous series to mark the connection and illustrate that each of his works are connected. The fifth work in the dinosaur series; ”Dinoasshole chapter 5: Triceratops”, is a powerful image of the struggles of the minorities, and shows Native Americans as a historically oppressed minority in violent combat with evil aliens. Mu Pan portrays man as the hunter who hunts his own kind, and in the piece ”Dinoasshole chapter 3: T.Rex” he compares them to the single most fearsome hunter of them all, the carnivorous Tyrannosaurus Rex.

You are in for an incredible sneak peek into Mu Pan’s marvelous mind, where war and mutilation is commonplace. It is going to be violent, bloody and anything but boring!

The exhibition consists of nine equilibristic works.

Mu Pan will be present at the opening and available for interviews.
