New York Academy of Art & Gallery Poulsen - Graduates 2016

One year ago, we presented a brand new exhibition concept in collaboration with the renowned art academy New York Academy of Art (NYAA) where we handpicked three promising talents and gave them the opportunity to show their skills in Gallery Poulsen. Not only was the exhibition a resounding success, several of the artists will return to show their solo exhibitions in 2017.

Thus, we have once again looked across the Atlantic, thoroughly scrutinizing the talent pool of NYAA with proficient eyes and ferocious curiosity in our search for the absolute best and most promising upcoming artists. Having consulted Peter Drake (Dean of Academic Affairs) and Wade Schuman (Director of Painting), we chose to invite four bright young talents. Angela Gram, Jaclyn Dooner, Taylor Schultek and Jiannan Wu each possess a very distinct artistic expression of ’je ne sais quoi’ – a clear and remarkable quality in their work.

With the exhibition ”Graduates 2016” we give you direct insight into the latest trends among the young art in the highly vibrant art scene in New York, when Dooner, Gram, Schultek and Wu take on the gallery space with their sharp figurative perspectives and evident technical skills. They have managed to create four unique realms that compliment each other extremely well. Across aesthetic approach and personal expression emerges an array of hidden spaces in the exhibition, which the audience are invited to sneak into. Doors, windows, hallways, empty streets and fragmented realities create an alluring mystique that compels us to question the otherwise recognizable.

At first glance, Jaclyn Dooner’s works seem characterized as beautiful perspective paintings, but she offers more than what meets the eye. Dooner is very preoccupied with creating spaces where contradictions occur: presence and absence, memory and present moments, light and shadow. She plays effortlessly with the contradictions that occur by using a limited and subtle color palette. We see only a small part of the entire room, giving us a feeling of lurking directly into the intimate space that is someone’s home.

Angela Gram is similarly working with fragments of an otherwise identifiable reality, however, in a more literal sense. Gram has created four distorted works of an else ways natural world that she splits into strange and surreal shapes. She challenges the way we understand the picturesque scenery. This is not merely an aesthetic scattered puzzle, but in her many layers we experience nature's savagery, which is spread out in a modern Western context, piece by piece.

Virtual reality meets graffiti culture in a very fine visual concoction in Taylor Schultek’s canvas. With a firm brush he illustrates a number of seemingly deserted alleys and abandoned spaces. The discreetly embedded, yet alluring glimmers of light reveal, however, that they are not desolated spaces. On the contrary, they are an expression of man's imprint on the world. Each beam of light heralds life just around the corner, behind the door and right there under the stairs.

With the underground space being his focal point, Chinese Jiannan Wu has created an impressive sculptural edifice of great dimensions. A fantastic detailed 60-inch tall underground station has captivated the gallery space. The piece titled "New York New York" is elegantly created as a magnificent classical relief, but the keen observer will quickly note the satire within the many scenarios played out in the four levels of the sculpture. The subway has become a regular space for a multitude of people, across all levels of society, seated shoulder to shoulder, until they leave this temporary reality and return to their daily lives without looking back.

You are in for a deliciously crisp slice of New York, when we serve four new talents, and thereby give you the opportunity to get involved from the very beginning!

The exhibition consists of 12 oil paintings and two sculptures.
All four artists will be present at the opening on Friday September 16th from 5-7pm.
