Telemarkens Helte - Gallery Poulsen at Dr. Holms Hotel 2016

Webflyer.jpg

During the German occupation in Norway in 1942, the Germans have destructive plans for the hydroelectric plant in the city of Vemork by Rjukan in Telemark. The goal is to produce heavy water to use in developing Germany’s first atomic bomb. Both the resistance fighters and the allies are concerned and initiate a sabotage action, also known as ”the Vemork Action”. Fortunately, they succeed in their mission and thus avert an immense disaster. We do not even dare to imagine the scale of such a catastrophe, had Hitler succeeded with this project as well.

Inspired by this authentic story and by the British war film ”The Heroes of Telemark” from 1965, based on this exact story, with Kirk Douglas and Richard Harris in the leads, Gallery Poulsen will travel to Norway during Easter to execute a carefully planned mission of their own. The action will take place at the legendary and exclusive Dr. Holms Hotel in Geilo, only few hours north of Vemork. However, we will not be preventing any catastrophes, but our mission is equally as well intentioned, exciting and explosive as the dynamite of the saboteurs, destroying the German inventory of heavy water and disturbing plans.

Gallery Poulsen’s delegation will not be conquering just any hotel, when we occupy Dr. Holms Hotel. The legendary hotel was built back in 1909 by Dr. J.C. Holm, who wished to offer fresh mountain air to patients with respiratory diseases.
The hotel has since become known as one of Norway’s most famous and luxurious hotels, where several movies have been produced – among them are Danish classic movies, such as ”Far til fire i sneen” (1954) and ”Min søsters børn i sneen” (2002).

With an immensely strong international team of loyal allies from near and far, we present a visual bombardment of colours, details, perspectives and interesting stories. The works are created with so much precision that even the most experienced sniper must succumb and capitulate. In other words, there will not be the slightest sign of wavering among the ranks when Gallery Poulsen is armed with more than 50 great figurative works by various artists, primarily residing in New York, making this exhibition the absolute largest mission executed outside of Denmark so far.

Although we are certainly ”the good guys”, just like the Telemark Heroes, we are not prevented from showing you terrifying, dramatic and breath-taking apocalyptic scenes, which ”Tale of a Black City”, the impressive work of Jean-Pierre Roy, gives us a striking example of. In this 13 feet long oil painting the apocalypse is just about to unfold in a mix of violent forces of nature, glowing geometry and trembling industrial architecture.

In Aaron Johnson’s unique acrylic painting ”Cowboy Coffee” we get an eloquent and grotesque image of what everyday downfall looks like. While the characteristic patriarchal and classic American cowboy is reigning by the end of the table, death pays a visit and evokes the already strained tension in the living room.

Nicola Verlato gives us a third image of what downfall can look like, in this context ”personal destruction”. His vinyl painting ”Hostia - Assassination No.2 - Marlowe” shows in its elegant grey shades the fabled murder of Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593), an English playwright, poet and interpreter of the Elizabethan era. The classically composed scene is both intense and disturbing with flexing muscles, lethal gazes and spouting blood. This work is part of the comprehensive and yet to be completed museum concept ”Hostia”, which tells us the story of the Italian philosopher and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-1975). Pasolini was often compared to the aforementioned Marlowe as they both suffered the same cold-blooded and mythical fate.

With these examples being merely a sampling of the entire ”Heroes of Telemark”, we can safely promise you that together with our allies we have been dispatched to enrich the guests of Geilo with a visual experience beyond the ordinary.

The exhibition will open and kick off with the famous Norwegian comedian Ørjan Burøe. In same manner as the art works, he will surely provide you with a new, interesting and liberatingly grotesque perspective on life.

We will not attack, but we are more than ready to stand upright when Gallery Poulsen in the spirit of Dr. Holm offers you the purest breath of international art. The mission is not to be mistaken; we wish to show you powerful, beautiful and captivating works that can compare to the high standard of Dr. Holms Hotel as well as the heights of Geilo’s magnificent mountain scenery. Nothing less will do when Gallery Poulsen and his delegation make their entrance as the new heroes of Telemark or rather, of Holm!
