Vuk Vidor - New Adventures Of The Skintrade 2009
20. februar - 21. marts 2009

The "Skintrade" series started around 2002 as a practical exercise: How do you paint a nude today?

How can it be done and be relevant? The nude is the most traditional subject in painting with landscapes so how to make it interesting? What is the need for a painted nude anyway when we are submerged in nudity from all sides, through advertising to the Internet?

When you type "nude " on the web you are directed to a million sites all more or less with pornographic content. You find sites with "wives for sale" from Eastern Europe, then quickly you move to Escort sites and finally to hardcore porn, all linked to each other through the digital maze.
So there it is, the nude today is that, endless images, still or moving, of anonymous women from around the globe in a massive exploitation game.

The only relevant way to "paint" a nude would then be to sample from that continuous flow of pictures and try to do something to them,
something different. And that was to give them back an mysteriousness and something suggestive which had been lost on the way.

The title came from a poem by Dylan Thomas, "The Adventures of the Skin Trade", with an addition from a song by Duran Duran also called "Skintrade" which talked about exploitation
("in exploitation's name we must be working for the Skintrade...")

The paintings are done with digital printing with a coat of resin on top, coming in 3 sizes each. Some videos using the same technique were produced sampling footage from porno movies taken on the web and treated to the same visual
result.
