”Dear Copenhagen”

”Dear Copenhagen”

"Dear Copenhagen" is an attempt to use the exhibition at Gallery Poulsen as a site for reflection on the cultural differences between highly-competitive, market-driven, American individualism and the Scandinavian emphasis on cooperation, consensus, and equality.

New York-based artist William Powhida uses humorous satire, wit, and sarcasm to comment on the American values of individual achievement and a system that requires relentless self-promotion to succeed in the crowded commercial field.

Copenhagen and the persistence of the “Janteloven” among the Scandinavian culture has provided a unique mirror for Powhida's own maximalist tendency to comment on and critique the social and economic conditions of art making in New York through text-based paintings, drawings, and sculptural forms.

In "A Solopsistic Map of the World According to a New York Artist" Powhida offers a grossly self-centered rendition of the global art world where political realities hover as secondary concerns to exhibition and sales. In "Some Twitter (August 2014 - Jan 2015)" the artist has truncated his twitter feed into a colorful, self-involved monolog cutting out any dialog or exchange with others. The large-scale painting reduces the artist's interaction on social media to an insane rant about the world around him.

Through a series of lists and letters Powhida further elaborates on the exchange between Gallery Poulsen and New York artists, who produce works in a culture that celebrates and privileges unique, individual expression and authorship. The Scandinavian idea of ‘lagom’, or ‘just right’, remains an alternative concept in America, where it is discussed as ‘sustainability’. This isn't a concept that sits well with art, which in America and around the world has become associated with luxury commodities. In America, it has taken on the form of an increase in private museums owned by private citizens with vast collections reflecting their social status.

Furthermore Powhida offers up a series of crumpled sheets of notebook paper that, devoid of text or content, reduce his practice to seductive forms that question the purpose of art in a $64 billion global market. Envy, jealousy, self-importance, and greed are feelings that Powhida puts on display, while offering a study and reinterpretation of Janteloven through a cynical American perspective.

The show includes six oil and acrylic paintings, nine wall objects and four sculptures.

William Powhida arrives Tuesday February 24th in Copenhagen and will be present at the opening.
