GERMAN TELLEZ

Born 1986, Bogotá, Colombia
Lives and works in Brooklyn, New York

German Tellez is a Colombian artist and MFA graduate from the New York Academy of Art. His artistic practice has focused on figurative drawing and painting, where he displays his love for technical refinement and his interest in the human figure. His subjects of interest include the forsaken of the mythological, the rational versus the instinctual, the quest for knowledge, the development of personality, and the instinct of cruelty. Some of his most recurrent images are the human body, totems, geometric forms, chaotic landscapes, and fragmentations.

"The Sacred Geometries series is an attempt to create painterly representations that evoke a sense of sacred and spiritual encounters in the viewer.

Using geometrical shapes in this series allows me to simplify the pictorial plane, while also giving me a placeholder for intricate renditions of forms and bodily shapes. The resulting effect is a combination of Renaissance and abstract painting, creating a unique and striking effect that invites the viewer to engage with the work on a deeper level.

By withholding any literal indication of the sacred, the series allows the viewer to explore the fundamental order that underlies both the artistic and spiritual experience. The geometrical forms used in the series suggest a fundamental order that is often associated with spiritual symbolism adding a layer of depth and meaning to the work. Through this series, I hope to inspire contemplation of the mysteries of human experience, consciousness, the universe, and our place within it, inviting the viewer to embark on a journey of self-discovery and “spiritual” exploration."
