“Aporetic Sequence” by Jean-Pierre Roy

True to tradition, the month of March is focused on the contemporary art scene as the annual Armory Week captivates New York and transforms The Big Apple into an internationally prestigious art mecca. Gallery Poulsen is of course to be found on the vibrant art scene. This year, we have chosen to spread our wings over Pier90 in a warm reunion with VOLTA NY, known for their particular global focus on solo projects by leading international artists.

It is, thus, our greatest pleasure to present Jean-Pierre Roy’s brand new solo exhibition “Aporetic Sequence”, created exclusively for VOLTA NY 2018. Nine breathtakingly thought-provoking paintings as well as one grandiose masterpiece, will comprise a unique sequential narrative that aesthetically plays out over each canvas and onto the next.

"Aporetic Sequence" is a continuation of Jean-Pierre Roy's latest thematic series in which he questions how time affects our cognitive instincts to navigate the reality we are presently find ourselves to be in, while the massive iconography of art history is breathing heavily down our necks.

In this new series for VOLTA NY, he proceeds in placing characters in an optically loaded environment allowing for the entropic confusion of historical metaphors and figurative drama to play out against an arid, dystopian landscape.

This series of 9 sequential paintings invigorates a narrative course of four faceless figures as they literally grapple with the ungraspable. The self-luminant Non-Spatiotemporal Geometry, representing an Aporetic impasse, shifts and slips from their hold as they wrestle with the form and themselves.

For "Aporetic Sequence", Jean-Pierre Roy has set out to pictorialize a very specific emotion – the split second when a perceptual image slips from the cognitive grasp. Reality, as we perceive it, is a construction, shaped and framed by our cognitive biases. Our biological systems for perception and acquisition of knowledge were evolved in an environment that no longer exists.

In other words, our ability to create change in the world is greater than our ability to perceive and understand that change. This state of impasse and the feeling of navigating by an infinite GPS, only to steer towards a dead end, was denounced by ancient Greek philosophers as a state of 'Aporia'. It is a slippery, charged, and capricious feeling, like grabbing at a slow floating piece of dust in the air, only to have it race out of your grip at the last moment, propelled by the very force of your hand acting on the air that carries it aloft.

Jean-Pierre Roy’s staggering exhibition displays ten spectacular oil paintings.
Roy will furthermore be present at the fair and available for interviews.
