Jean-Pierre Roy Solo "Come Up From This"

Opening March 6 2021

Spring is the time for the return of light. Join us as we welcome its return to the sky, and to the gallery with the light filled paintings of Jean-Pierre's new exhibition “Come Up From This.” We open the doors on Saturday March 6th and It is with immense pride and joy that we invite you back to the gallery after the long wait for the authorities' permission. As the old saying goes "All good things come to those who wait,” and Jean-Pierre Roy's third solo show with Gallery Poulsen, is certainly worth the wait. Jean-Pierre has taken us to another world in this exhibition, both in form and expression.

Created during NYC's 2020 Covid Lockdown, Roy's new work builds upon his use of Landscape as a vehicle to examine contemporary anxieties around the human condition, and the spaces we inhabit. Oscillating between the Utopian and the Dystopian, Roy's paintings place both the viewer and the artist himself in the center of an ecology where the vivid cast of light and shadow hide a world where survival itself is the great arbiter. Waves of grass writhe for position under a nourishing sun, sheets of forest flora harbor neomorphic growth and long dead trees blossom with luminescent tendrils.

At a time when the microbiome that permeates our living space seems pitted against us, Roy's landscapes offer a world where a tenuous detente with the systems of growth and decay is built. Structures mediate a potential peace between the constant upwelling of an ecology whose survival pushes against our-self preservation. Previously unseen emergent ecologies rise silhouetted against the sky and refuse to offer either praise or condemnation. Both witness and intermediator, the artist and the viewer are left to ponder our sublime and uncertain relationship with the horizon.

While Roy's new works offer a breathtaking return to the Landscape Genre, he has challenged its traditional rectilinear format and delivers us to these vista’s through a circular portal: The Tondo. The organic perspective adds a whole new dimension to the tradition while providing a fresh take on the historical language amounting to a monumental leap in Roy’s vision. These new paintings lay out the beginnings of an undiscovered country without topographical language in hopes of framing a space to explore the newly alien landscape around us with wonder and high regard.

“Come Up From This” is Jean-Pierre Roy's third solo exhibition since his 2013 debut with Gallery Poulsen. He has since played a crucial role in building our large international audience and in defining the gallery we are today. This body of works cements his legacy within the gallery while highlighting his importance to Art History.

Meet Jean-Pierre for the opening on Saturday, where he will be present virtually live from his studio in Brooklyn from 2-4 p.m.

Of course, we will be following all guidelines. We can have a maximum of 14 people in the gallery at a time, so we hope that you will take advantage of the long opening hours, which are between 12.00 and 16.00
