The past one and a half year have, for most of us, been very trying times, defined by uncertainty and everchanging rules and regulations that have made social situations, work and attempts at reaching personal milestones more complicated to navigate through. Despite these circumstances we at Gallery Poulsen maintain our optimistic attitude towards life and the visual arts. With our upcoming group exhibition, we wish to convey this positive attitude and at the same time, reject the prevailing negativity that has left its mark on cultural institutions for so long now, which we instead think should play a significant role in how we as society and individuals come back after facing a crisis.
True to tradition we have named our upcoming summer exhibition after a movie, this year the French The Intouchables from 2011. Like in the movie we embrace, with our The Intouchables, the beauty and differences of life despite situations that are less than ideal and give, with our combination of artists from all corners of the world, the possibility to get together over life-affirming artistic experiences that act as a sanctuary and meeting point which provide us with new energy and new insights. The Intouchables exemplifies the importance of attempting to find happiness and meaning in a world and existence that is influenced by a constant stream of challenges. A sentiment that we wholeheartedly agree with; Life cannot be relived.
In this mission art serves as a guiding light that show us our own world in a more beautiful and more complete perspective, which makes it possible to discover life’s subtle qualities that are often overshadowed by today’s social and political climate.
With The Intouchables we have brought together a line-up of the very finest visual artists Gallery Poulsen has to offer. The exhibition will feature old as well as new acquaintances that all have an incredible talent and precision in their respective media and expressions in common. The represented artists have not been forced to interpret the themes of the movie that is the namesake of the exhibition, but because the euphoria of the world slowly re-opening is hitting all of us you don’t have to search a long time to find an inherent positivity in the artworks. Because of this the exhibition conveys the artists hopeful views on a world that is on its way out of a storm like no other.
We’ll allow ourselves to finish off with a quote from our very own Jean-Pierre Roy that we also used before last year’s summer exhibition, which importance is just as big in the (hopefully) final stages of the pandemic.
