We are very happy to announce that Gallery Poulsen will participate in this year's Volta NY with a solo presentation of Alfred Steiner. The booth will present his watercolours and new three dimensional works on Fiberboard.

Sponge, 2014, 200 x 160 cm / 78 x 63 in. Oil on medium-density fiberboard

Alfred Steiner's amazing and one of a kind artworks are hybrids of the stylized and the naturalistic. They are one answer to the question How can one reconcile the stylized and the naturalistic?

To make one of these works, Steiner begins by choosing a character. Then he free associates while looking at the forms that make up the character, just as one might look at a cloud or Rorschach blot. Sometimes this openness leads Steiner to make a connection between the character and the object. Other times, he finds that his freely-associated object bears a relationship to the underlying character, whether by coincidence, unconscious influence or otherwise. These two processes often become so intertwined that he cannot disentangle them with respect to a particular character/object relationship. After he settles on an object, Steiner scours Google Images for a suitable photographic model. He uses watercolor both to unite the disparate elements and to engage the tradition of naturalist illustration, keeping in mind that the underlying subjects are often wildlife.

We look forward to showing you Jean-Pierre Roy's - The New Me is Already Old, currently on view in the gallery.

Contrasting the artificial and natural world Roy's cinematic exhibition 'The New Me is Already Old ' explores the man-made beauty of a previously unknown universe. Depticted in the paintings is the Past (the nature ), the Present (the man) and the Future ( the geometric shapes ) all at once. This exhibition is a journey across dimensions , a journey that unfolds before us and sharpens our narrative senses. The figure has taken centre stage in his universe and is fighting a "Clash of the Titans" battle with himself or with the reality we all find ourselves in.
